Firefighting Foam Chemicals Are Affecting Whole Communities

When there’s a fire to be put out at an airport or a military base, the first priority is to contain the flames and extinguish what could be a disaster. Rarely is anybody thinking about the methods at which fires are put out, but in recent cases it’s become a question of how a certain firefighting method is affecting the people and property involved.

A firefighting foam called AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) that is commonly used on military bases and airports has been found to be dangerous to people and almost impossible to get rid of, earning the title ‘Forever Chemicals.’

Matt Dolman describes the danger of these chemicals over time, explaining that this foam is not used for commercial use unless it’s at a military base. The chemicals can stick around for up to 40 years, get into the water and start to grow into surrounding regions leading to growing cases of cancers, diseases, and ailments have been linked to this foam. 

Stan Gipe also elaborates that these forever chemicals can’t be eradicated when they’re in your community. You can move the chemicals, but the removal process costs millions of dollars and puts those involved in the cleanup process at risk.
